Why not?

We could build a Spaceship that is big enough to house

a thousand people, gardens and ranches for the livestock.

We could fly it for hundreds of years to complete

the voyages between star systems.

A couple of technological challenges come to mind...

1. When you get far away from a star,

the amount of sunshine is reduced to almost nothing...

Bad for the garden. We would need to use grow lights.

That requires electricity and power generators.

2. Boredom. What would people DO to fill up their time?

3. COLD. It gets cold out in space and

the ship would need to run heaters constantly...

That requires electricity and power generators.

Consider this scenario:

If Wall Street in the USA fails due to bonehead mortgage lending... and the USA stock market self-destructs, that will cause the Hong Kong Bansai market to collapse... the collapse of the Hong Kong Bansai will cause the German Gotterdammerung Market to falter bringing down the London Picadilly Circus... With currency values plummeting so fast that the pound will only be usefull as toilet paper, the Brazilian ALCOOL futures market will boil over and leave a stinking mess on the floor. As everyone knows, Brazilian ALCOOL is directly related to college frat party drinking of ethanol right from the pump causing widespread panic among people over thirty. Since people over thirty are about half of the investors in feng-shui arrangement services, that entire business will effortlessly re-arrange itself into a zen masterpiece drawn in sand that subsequently gets washed away when the tide rushes in... The other half of the investors in feng-shui services (people under thirty) will start texting each other frantically causing an email flash mob to converge at the corner of 34th and Vine, Los Angeles... there they will demand little bottles of "Love Potion #10"... even though they have never even downloaded the song! RRRRIOT control special forces from Blackwater Incorporated will tazer the mob and they will all be taken away to secret government prison camps located in the Trinity Alps. IBM and Almaden is a fine example of the advantage of a planned community. Light rail station within walking distance to the factory.Housing around a Golf Course and the Swim & Racquet Club up on the hill... better than the random sprawl of the rest of San Jose... Reston, VA; Columbia, MD and Scotia, CA are other examples.

I lived in Columbia and IT WAS GREAT! Based on the idea of PODS, the necessities of life were within walking distance. Very Handy when snowstorms blocked the roads every year.

More people using BART and the bus would reduce pollution. Some people would start riding if the price was lower... Federal Subsidy. AND it would reduce TRAFFIC JAMS increasing quality of life for the average Joe.

There is a bunch of frequent riders that I've gotten to know. We have conversations and gossip... BIG FUN. If we can spend a trillion dollars to blow up Iraq and Afghanistan we can afford to buy poor people a bus ticket.

Reply by P.M. Some say VTA shouldn't charge for bus service at all. Some buses aren't used because their fareboxes are broken. But then how to pay for the service?

Reply by G.V. Federal Subsidy of Public Transit. If you do not charge at all it becomes difficult to determine how many people rode and how much the Federal Government should pay. Maybe reduce the fare to a quarter and that way an accurate count is possible. The goal is to increase ridership. That reduces the number of cars on the road and reduces air pollution.

Bio-diesel would be wonderful for school buses also. That would reduce the amount of poisonous gases breathed by children. Ever smell a bus? Bio-diesel smells like popcorn. What do you want your kids to breathe?

It's social. I often ride with the same people day after day and we have become friends... Then we chat on Facebook... etc... trade helpful hints... One lady I rode with got laid off at work so I told her to apply where I work and now she has been hired.

Hi, I'm greg and I'm an alcoholic. My share for November 22 2006. My friend had spent the entire day working on custom greeting cards on the computer. She finished the last card, the glue had dried and everything that needed to sparkle, had been sparkled... She got her boots on and she walked on down the hall... out the door and down the street... To the post office... at exactly 5:02 PM... yep, late... she could hear the sounds of our post master inside, but you have to be on time at the post office... so she looked down at her elbow and saw… "THE SERENITY PRAYER" printed on a bookmark... Gee, just when she needed a bookmark, a bookmark appeared... not that she needed to mark a book, but the concepts expressed4u... were exactly what was needed to calm the frustration of being late and missing out on good stuff... So, when I got home, we drove over to the other post office, mailed all the cards, stopped and bought a steak sandwich and came home... and all was right with the world... on time and only slightly over budget... we can just write that off to experience...

This song was written by me after seeing the movie "Starstruck" at a Georgetown Theatre called the Biograph in Washington DC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starstruck_(1982_film)

I was so filled with enthusiasm by that movie that I said to myself,

"I can do THAT!" and I did...

If you have never seen "Starstruck", It features Australian and New Zealand teenagers singing and dancing to New Wave Music. Jo Kennedy is the astonishlingly perky singer and "Split ENZ" does the music... The teenagers have to win a talent contest held at the Sydney Opera House in order to save their Mother's Pub, but they are not entered. They sneak in dressed as electricians/stage hands and burst into song while the other band is waiting for their turn... They "Blow the Roof" off the Opera house and win the contest with the song "It's the Monkey in Me that makes me want to do it!". Jo Kennedy reminds me of Cindi Lauper but Jo is MUCH BETTER! Released in the early 1980's they were a worldwide hit... Then Jo Kennedy selected to do Australian TV shows and stage shows eventually becoming a director of short movies and TV. Never to be heard again in any continent but Australia. This movie features a synchronized swimming song and dance with lifeguards and inflatable sharks in a pool on top of a roof in Sydney. Kangaroo suits, true love, and silly artics. A cast of many generations beating time on the bar in the Mother's PUB while Jo sings and dances on the counter. During the early 1970's a gentleman and his wife were working in Palo Alto, California and he discovered the key to enlightenment. He published it as a book and became a leader of a religious group very popular with the high tech crowd surrounding Apple and HP. To put it briefly, the key is 01101011001110110100010001... and it went on like that for a hundred pages finally ending with the amazing conclusion that astonished the world and allowed the couple to earn a million dollars from royalties... 11010011100001110101100110.

A few years passed and the wife made a public statement: "While my husband is a fine fellow and a wonderful father to our children, I sadly must inform you that he is almost entirely wrong about the key to enlightenment. By pumping seawater out of the ocean in black pipes with solar reflectors we could transform the middle east into a Garden of Eden. The water would travel thru the pipes and boil becoming steam. When the steam condenses, it would be 100% pure H2O suitable for drinking, washing or watering crops. When water changes state from a liquid to a gas it expands and that kinetic energy could be harnessed with turbines or a steam engine to power the pumps. At night, the highly salted water would flow back into the ocean.

This is technologically simple to construct. No silicon chips needed. The Pipe could be standard black pvc and the "reflectors could be as simple as a larger diameter white pipe cut in half and placed under the black pipe pointing at the sun. No complex aiming or sun tracking computer driven parabolic mirrors needed... Just get the general direction correct and the water will boil. Suppose we used a one foot black pipe and a five foot white pipe, just lay it on the ground and use stakes and cable ties to hold it in place.

The really tricky part is constructing a steam engine to power the pumps. That would require a mechanical engineer familiar with ancient technology.

On a massive scale, a country Like Saudi Arabia could water the "empty quarter" and grow food, fuel crops and fish ponds. One of the main problems in Iraq is a lack of drinkable water. People get sick drinking water that has been polluted with urine and feces. Let's suppose a pipeline from the Persian Gulf was built to Bagdahd... Millions of people would benefit. Lives would be saved.

OR... Let's build one of these in between Los Angeles and San Diego. The current system pumps water from the Colorado River and Northern California. Surely, a distillery located near the consumer would be cheaper.

Rainbow Gathering Idaho 2001:

I went to the gathering with a goal in mind. I wanted to play my guitar and sing in public. Yes, mission accomplished. Living in Chico, California and working at the plastics factory when there was a layoff, my wife suggested that I borrow the car and drive over to the gathering. My friend Mike wanted to go and so we checked the oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid and water and set out on a classic American road trip. We made it as far as Reno the first day and slept by the side of the road.
Normally I'm creepy about just pulling off and sleeping because there is the possibility of being hassled by the police but Mike soothed my fears and we spent an uneventful night there. Then on thru Nevada to Winnemucca and a turn North to get to Boise traveling thru the High Desert. Boise is a very beautiful town in a fertile valley. The directions printed from the website recommended going an extra 50 miles out of the way thru Sun Valley instead of taking the shortest route because the
road was supposed to be difficult to travel. We drove thru the Sawtooth Mountain Range (stunning beauty) and finally saw the tiny sign directing us to the Gathering.

About a mile down the dirt road, the car stopped running. All it needed was 15 minutes rest and it started right up. We had been traveling fast for hours and it was over whelmed by the demands i was putting on it. Many people drove by offering help. I was upset but Mike calmed my fears and sure enough it was fine.

Another 5 miles down the dirt road there was a fork with a sheriff... he directed us to the left and gave us a piece of paper telling us that it was an illegal gathering. Mike wanted to ask him a bunch of questions but I just wanted to go and avoid police contact... We found parking and walked in with our few belongings and set up camp. Went to sleep.

Mike was interested in finding "Serenity Ridge" (a 12 step AA/NA meeting-we met at Mom's AA in Chico and were both interested in the program at that time) ... and so the next day we started our search...

On a side meadow there was a sculpture made out of branches that formed two interlocking three sided pyramids. One with the pointy end up and one with the pointy end down. It formed a three dimensional star... Like the "Star of David"... On the path we saw "Dun Dun Village". They were doing drumming and synchronized dancing.

I ran out of water and was getting really thirsty. Mike suggested that I ask the nearest people for help and "Just bliss out"... It so happened that the people not only had fresh clean drinking water and a glass, but the had herbal tea... I was very grateful... not only for the physical help I got but for the knowledge that my needs were going to be taken care of for the rest of the event... I gave myself permission to "just bliss out"...

Then we went to the main campfire and danced to the drums for hours... actually all night long... It was cold up there in the mountains of Idaho and we only had sleeping bags, no tent... If we left the campfire, it was uncomfortable, so, why NOT stay and enjoy the unique experience of 30
drummers...

The next day I went over to the "Relaxation Station" near the entrance and sat there all day long. I played my guitar and sang for all the newcomers to the gathering. A man wearing a silly "Dr. Seuss" hat sat down with his guitar and I taught him how to play "Uncle John's Band" by the Grateful Dead. We played it for a very long time... It seemed to him to have an odd chord sequence but after repeated instruction, we got it down. Fortunately, I had brought my hand written songbooks and the lyrics/chords to hundreds of classic rock/folks songs were in them... We had a fine time at "Relaxation Station" a place where newcomers were encouraged to stop and rest after their long journey... A lady was telling fortunes with Tarot Cards... we had beverages, food and anything else that a weary traveler could want... Grass, music and shade...

There was a fellow that was playing a trick on passers-by... he had a piece of foam that looked like a concrete block. he would ask the stranger to help him lift it because it was so heavy, then he would "accidentally" drop the block on their toe... They thought it was going to hurt them because it appeared to be a very heavy object, but it actually was very light... The "OH NO!' experience turned into silly laughter when the passers-by realized the joke... He did this to about 15 people during the afternoon I spent there... ahh, simple minds easily amused by cosmic theatre...

The next day was July 3rd and I walked over to the main campfire... Playing my 12 string guitar and singing loudly to the assembled thousands of people. Mostly "Iko Iko"...

ONE DAY WE ALL NOTICED A GIANT RAINBOW IN THE SKY. IT WAS CAUSED BY ICE CRYSTALS IN THE CLOUDS BEING DIFFRACTED... My wife calls this phenomenon a "Sun Dog"... It stretched for over half of the visible sky and stayed there for hours. You could tell something was happening because the people in the meadow all of a sudden started pointing at the sky... In our campsite under the trees I could see the main meadow and saw hundreds of people spread out for a mile stop what they were doing and point...

The people camped next to us were 20 something years old and they had long involved conversations about their careers in computer businesses in the Midwest... they also talked about their body piercing and the trouble with infections/who to go do the piercing that had clean tools
etc. I sat with them for and afternoon and sang them songs. One of the fine things about having my handwritten songbooks is that the people I play for can select which songs to sing from the index. Often they would exclaim "That's my favorite song!" and so we would sing it... It helps because they often don not know the words and can read them while we are singing...

I had to leave the gathering before the big July 4th celebration because my wife had bought tickets to a concert in Clear Lake, California. I took the shortcut road home and it was fine. The directions to the gathering recommended going the long way because of high winds... IF YOU ARE DRIVING A BUS WITH A VOLKSWAGON VAN WELDED ON TOP... But my little Honda car went smoothly.

I drove home alone and Mike stayed there at the gathering and found his own way home... as it turned out he stayed there for a month and got a terrible ride home in an old bus with bad brakes...

On the way home I experienced a light rain shower in the High Desert of Nevada. I stopped the car and walked around the in rain... It is so very rare to have rain in the desert so it was a happy time. I also watched fireworks as I was approaching Reno from the east.

Back at home we packed the car and camped out at a state park near Konocti Resort. Saw Dan Fogelburg and danced it the bar to a local band... Overall, a fine trip that was an unexpected blessing... I was so fortunate to get laid off at the Factory (for a week)...

The lens could be very thin glass that is scored on one side to make a "Fresnel" lens to focus the heat elsewhere... As anyone knows, it is cooler in the shade than it direct sunlight, so why not just create a shady Earth ? Yes, the shade would have to be thousands of MILES in diameter but he explains how to do it. A worthy space construction project... It would take decades to build but we HAVE the time and the technology already. In the story, astronauts melt sand on the moon to make the glass. The advantage of the 1/6 gravity makes lifting tons of payload easier.

Quite a fantastic idea but... The communications satellite was just as fantastic when he proposed that... Now, it's common...

Since it's unlikely that we will stop driving cars... or reduce pollution causing global warming... Maybe we should investigat a technological solution.

I'm always troubled with soldiers. Most have suffered so much and all have PTSD. My friends from the Vietnam era were mostly victims of the draft... So I can sympathize with them... and try to help their suffering.

The younger soldiers VOLUNTEERED. So it is like a Darwin test. If a person is foolish enough to volunteer to go to war... we certainly do not want their genes to be passed on to the next generation. Wow, that's a harsh way to look at this problem... as if the Volunteers were at responsible for their own behavior.

A better plan would be to NOT go to war... Spend your youth playing guitar and kissing girls.

It's very interesting, the will of the Feds to prevent the People from getting excellent Cannabis. California cannabis is the best in the world. Now there has to be a bigger reason for the Feds to be so rabid about their disdain for the non-lethal plant. Obama did say he wouldn't use federal resources to raid medicinal cannabis, but he did it anyway? Why? Why say no, then do it anyway? There is something very, very interesting about the psychology of it all. Could it be, that excellent cannabis is bringing humans closer together, in a more tribal, communal fashion, making them more loving, compassionate and humane? Could this be the REAL reason the Feds are so adamant about preventing the use of cannabis that is grown so well? Maybe excellent cannabis reverses the effects of the Pineal-Gland-shrinking-Fluoride they pump in to our municipal water supplies? Maybe cannabis reconnects humans to their Humanism, proper. Maybe cannabis brings us back to our nature, where we belong, instead of pulling us farther away from it by swilling the State Sponsored Poisons like booze and Pharma? Maybe excellent cannabis is.......BAD FOR CORPORATE BUSINESS? Could it be? Maybe our "Leaders" aren't interested in a nation of highly educated, highly conscious, aware, compassionate Humanist's capable of critical thinking?

Violence and Repetition in B. E. Ellis's "American Psycho"

Richard Snyder (CEO Simon and Schuster) decided that his company would not allow the book "American Psycho"to be published. They wrote off the half a million dollar adance to the author as a total loss and shredded the books. His feeling was that not only was the book obscenely violent, it was boring too. Critics said it was too repetative. Another publisher, Alfred Knopf, printed this book and sales were poor.

In a footnote, the big question of censorship in America was dismissed as beyond the scope of this article. If you OWN a printing press, you have freedom of the press... If you do NOT own a press, you have to write what the owner wants. The invention of the XEROX machine encouraged may people to write their own oncensored magazines. This was especially popular within the "Punk" community of Generation X. Fanzines became the new media of choice due to the absense of "Parental Control".

Blogging on the Internet allows the average American to post their thoughts online for the world to read. There are so many blogs that the chances of
many people reading your words is small. In general, only the people that you invite read your page. What a person publishes is not checked for
accuracy or truthfulness. A skilled computer person can get their words searched by GOOGLE so that random web surfers will notice them.

The UNABOMBER, Ted Kasynski, wanted his "Manifesto" printed in the New York Times. He was successful in getting his ecology message published. I wonder if he would have set so many bombs if he had the ability to write a blog. It might have relieved his need to have his words read. I feel that the process of blogging let's me get things off my chest and has mental health benefits. I rant and rave online and then feel calmer.
Emailing is a great stress reliever too.

Commercial radio in the USA is almost all owned by the Clear Channel Corporation. They have marketing programs on their computers that select which songs to play. There is a strict playlist that appeals to specific target audiences. This makes the broadcasting of anything that is new and different impossible. This corporate censorship can only be overcome by public radio, and internet radio stations.

A skilled computer person may publish their own songs on a band website.
Getting paid for music is somewhat more tricky. In the olden days, a FM radio station could select to play a record and pay royalties to the performers and songwriters. Nowdays, even the major record labels are having difficulty getting paid for their product due to napster and its clones. Commercial radio is regulated by the FCC and Howard Stern's shows on Clear Channel received large fines and then were taken off the station. Internet radio has no government censorship but a dramatically smaller audience. While we have the tools to publish, corporations control the vast share of the market.

In conclusion, distribution systems owned by corporations allow them to
censor content. Popularity and sales decide what should be published. The lesson of Ellis's book was that it was not the obscene violence that prevented it from being printed by Simon and Schuster, but the lack of sales potential. Their decision to not publish might have been different if they had a best seller on their hands.

We have the technology to print or record anything but getting the public to notice is difficult.

My humble opinion: Be aware that the current homeland security terrorist list includes the organizations ELF (Earth Liberation Front) and ALF (Animal Liberation Front). It is not only illegal to engage in eco-terrorism, it's one of those crimes that qualifies a person to be an "Unlawful Enemy Combatant" and under USA Patriot Act rules you may be held in prison indefinitely without contact with your friends, family, lawyer or media. They do not have to tell you what crime you are charged with nor do they have to tell your mom if you have been arrested. You simply disappear... No Miranda Laws... No Habeas Corpus... It's back to the 1214 A.D. (before the Magna Carta). EARTH FIRST! is not listed.
